*With apologies for cross-posting*

Dear colleagues interested in Digital Humanities,
The project "Reuniting fragments, identifying scribes and characterizing
scripts: the Digital palaeography of Greek and Coptic papyri" has just
started in September in Basel and will be hosted on the website
D-SCRIBES.ORG which should soon be ready to launch. Besides a
presentation of the project, it will gather information on the current
initiatives related to Digital Palaeography and Document Analysis of
Ancient Texts as well as a tool allowing the registration to the
mailing-list on these topics. The first message of this mailing list
contains two announcements that may interest some of you, and I would
like to take this opportunity to mention that the position of technical
lead in Basel is still open to application (see description attached).
Do not hesitate to forward this message to potentially interested
people.

THE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: DIGITAL APPROACHES IN GREEK PALAEOGRAPHY

Institute of Classical Studies, University of London (December 14, 2018)
We invite interested scholars and colleagues to participate in a one-day
discussion workshop exploring digital approaches, methods and tools to
the study of Ancient Greek palaeography, script and scribal hands.
Although the focus is on Ancient Greek, contributions dealing with
related topics in other ancient languages are welcome. We would like to
see a mix of classicists working on palaeography who are interested in
applying digital approaches to their material, and digital humanities or
informatics scholars with an interest in working with ancient writing
and scripts.
Please send an email outlining your interests in this area, and any
prior work if applicable, to gabriel.bodard at sas.ac.uk and
klaas.bentein at ugent.be by October 31. Notification of acceptance will be
given by November 15.
We have a small amount of funding available to support attendees travel.
Please let us know if you would like to apply for this support, and how
much you would need.

project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and
based at the University of Geneva (project leader: Paul Schubert). Its
aim will be to develop a digital platform for the study and description
of the typology of Greek documentary papyri. The funding provided by the
SNSF will cover the hiring of three scientists.

Postdoc in documentary papyrology (80%, 4 years)
A papyrologist with a broad knowledge of Greek documentary papyri, whose
task will be to map a robust taxonomy of the whole corpus. She/he will
have to work in close collaboration with the postdoc computer specialist
in order to develop the interface. Her/his output will consist in the
elaboration of a taxonomy, which should result in an online, open access
publication. Further output will consist of articles submitted to
peer-reviewed journals.

desired, or to prepare the next steps in her/his career. The postdoc

Postdoc computer specialist in the Digital Humanities (80%, 4 years)
A computing scientist with a high degree of competence in the Digital
Humanities, with a special focus on ancient languages. She/he will
develop the interface and display. She/he should have excellent skills
in html programming, display building and image processing, handling of
xml-encoded texts, and some specific experience with Ancient Greek
texts. Skills would be required also in CSS, JavaScript, Python, as well
as with MySQL databases. Her/his output will consist in the interface
that will allow researchers to access the material selected for the
typology. Further output will consist of articles submitted to
peer-reviewed journals.

 	* Employment rate: 80%, leaving 20% to develop her/his own research if
desired, or to prepare the next steps in her/his career. The postdoc
will be expected to spend at least three full workdays every week at the
University of Geneva.

asset).

PhD student in documentary papyrology (4 years)
She/he will be working on a PhD thesis covering a specific aspect of the
typology of Greek documentary papyri, namely the _hypomnema_
(memorandum), under the supervision of the project leader. She/he will
also be using the tool developed by the two postdoc scientists. Her/his
output should consist mainly of a monograph that will conform to the new
SNSF guidelines regarding Open Access.

 	* Duration: 4 years, starting in early January (to be determined). The
PhD student is expected to work in Geneva, together with the rest of the
research team.
 	* Salary: approx. 47'000 Swiss francs (EUR 42'000) / year.
 	* Working language: the dissertation will be written either in English
(preferably) or in French.

a letter of application (stating for which position they are applying),
a full CV with list of publications, a photocopy of the highest diploma,
and two reference letters, by e-mail (pdf format), to Prof. Paul
Schubert (paul.schubert at unige.ch), no later than Thursday, Nov. 15,
2018.
