Dear all

Please find below the Call for Papers for a workshop on Computational Paleography that I will be co-organizing in conjunction with the 16th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (Lausanne, September 7, 2021).

May I draw your attention on the fact that this workshop welcomes short presentations of new/future projects based on challenging material and research questions requiring interdisciplinary collaborations.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you are working on datasets that would benefit from the use of computer-assisted approaches related to paleography (see the list of topics below) or to forward to potentially interested colleagues.

Many thanks and wishing you all the best,

Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello

Call for Papers IWCP – 1st International Workshop on Computational Paleography

Dates: September 7, 2021

Venue: Lausanne, Switzerland / online

Description

The IWCP 2021 workshop is co-located with the ICDAR2021 Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. The goal of this workshop is to bridge the gap between the different research fields analyzing handwritten scripts in ancient artefacts. It is mainly targeting (but not limited to) computer scientists, natural scientists and humanists involved in the study of ancient writing systems (scripts and their components) as well as their material (characteristics of the physical inscribed objects). By fostering discussion between the three communities, it aims to favor future interdisciplinary collaborations that will tackle actual research questions on ancient manuscripts.

The workshop is planned for half a day with a keynote talk by Dr. Peter Stokes, oral presentations and lively discussions. Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and accepted submissions will be presented in the workshop and published with ICDAR proceedings in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.

Safety measures will be considered with regards to COVID-19. In case of necessity, the event will be held with options for online participation. All accepted papers will be published in the IWCP2021 proceedings.

Topics of Interest

Handwriting style analysis (definition and identification of script types)

Recognition, detection, classification and comparison of handwriting elements (such as letters, words, and symbols)

    Writer identification and retrieval

    Joins identification among manuscript fragments

Manuscript clustering according to measurement of key features in scripts and layout

Recovery of illegible/lost writing (palimpsest, faded/damaged writing)

Material analysis of inks, colourants, binders and writing supports

Non-invasive, on-site investigations of written artefacts

    Reconstruction of writing processes

    Provenance studies

    Dating terminus post quem

    Paleographic applications of handwriting modelling

    Quantitative methods applied to Paleography

    Software applications supporting paleographical research

Virtual Research Environments, Virtual Libraries and annotated corpora supporting paleographical research (e.g. IIIF-based)

Historical research questions based on challenging handwritten corpora requiring computational support

For work on historical documents in general that are not focusing on handwriting/paleography, we recommend you have a look at <https://blog.sbb.berlin/hip2021/> HIP2021.

Submission instructions

The IWCP-2021 welcomes the submission of original, previously unpublished work that is relevant to the Topics of this workshop.

By submitting a paper to this Workshop all authors implicitly agree to be bound by the IAPR Ethical Requirements for Authors.

Papers from on-going projects presenting preliminary, mid-term or pilot data are welcome.

New projects based on challenging or sensitive (unpublished) corpora can submit an abstract that may, upon discussion, be published or integrated in the Workshop Final Report.

Participants can choose between two formats:

-         A short-paper (max 8 pages) submission and a short presentation for on-going projects presenting datasets, final or preliminary results as well as innovative methodologies and tools;

- An abstract (1 page) and a short presentation for new projects based on challenging material and research questions requiring interdisciplinary collaborations

Details on the submission procedure and instructions for authors are available on the workshop website
