Dear colleagues interested in Digital Paleography,

In the scope of D-scribes project, multiple enhancement methods were tested
to enhance the legibility of papyri images, mainly by increasing the
contrast between ink and background. Considering that these methods may be
useful to a wider community of scholars working with digital reproductions
of ancient manuscripts, we have developed HIERAX, a free, open-source
software which includes an image processing tool and an image viewer.

Please visit hierax.ch <https://hierax.ch/>

Under "download", you will have access to a Windows or a Mac version and to
the open source code. You will also find instructions for the installation.

Please note that the first time you install Hierax, the Matlab Runtime
application (about 585 Mb) is downloaded over the Internet and installed.
This might take some time but is required only once.

Once the software is installed, see the section "Interface" on hierax.ch for
the operating instructions and "Usage" for tips and further information.
There is for example a "Case Study" section that illustrates what methods
were preferred for what tasks.

We hope that you will find this tool useful and we would be very interested
for feedbacks on material other than papyrus,

Wishing you all the best in your manuscript studies,

Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello and Vlad Atanasiu
