Dear Scholars,
The translation of a digitised Medieval manuscript page has revealed the record of a rare Mediterranean medicinal plant, from c. 1444. The plant is Atropa baetica, which is now endangered and included on the IUCN Red List. It should be of interest to anyone studying the use and development of botanical medicines as the manuscript has 128 pages dedicated to medicinal plant species, either grown in the Dominican monastery physic garden or kept in the apothecary cabinet. This particular plant was used for cosmetic applications, to the eyes and face, and as an abortifacient: to induce miscarriage as a form of contraception.
